Nothing else to say, really …

… well … it doesn’t sound quite as mental as some of his other works … although appearances are deceiving, and of course in reality it’s just as hard

But I’m working through it. I can at least play through the entire track now (mistakes and missed bits notwithstanding); there’s only one more section to learn, per se. Then it’s “just” a matter of getting the fingers to do what I need them to.

Flash *is* (or can be) substance, just as much as slower playing – which is always what is held up as in some indefinable way “better”. Imagine, I’d you can, Dream Theater with not John Petrucci, but … B.B. King … or David Gilmour perhaps. Nothing against either of them (well, I don’t enjoy King’s playing, and think there are much better blues players, but that’s not the point :-p ), but their playing would not work any more than Petrucci would fit in with Pink Floyd, or with B.B. King’s band.

Deriding music above a given number of notes per second is just as moronic as refusing to listen to slower music. Both are equally valid, rbut just equire different skills, and evoke different emotions. Not better or worse; just different.

So there’s your comeback next time you hear “all flash no substance”: turn round to whoever said it and inform them that “flash is substance” :-p
