Some perspective for us all

This is absolutely stunning. The Bad Astronomer has posted a wonderful photo of an absolutely incredible number of stars.

How does a brain truly grasp “a thousand trillion”? It’s really actually beyond comprehension. Though we can talk about it, and make it somewhat more manageable by talking about powers of ten, we can’t really take it in. We have no frame of reference, and are just left floating in an ocean of immensity

(or something).

    I don’t want to frighten you but I have the nasty feeling that they ain’t stars. It looks like an image I have titled Subaru Deep Field.

    Has it occurred to you that if you were teleported to a random location that you might not be able to see anything at all.
