My online band’s new myspace

Go check us out!!!  A.H.I.

This began as the brainchild of rob_on_guitar who got a bunch of volunteers together from the NZ Guitars online forum to make some rockin’ music. We’ve got a few songs done now – despite being spread across the globe – and the latest, “Resurrect Me”, is up on the Myspace. I have to say: I loooove it. 8) Go listen now.

I also have a YouTube playlist of me recording bits and pieces for some A.H.I songs, including this:

Happy birthday to me ^_^

New video: Chicago – Hard to Say I’m Sorry

As promised (or threatened ;) ), here’s the latest video. This cover of Chicago’s cool old ballad, “Hard to Say I’m Sorry”, is an online collaboration between Owen Vickers, his lady, and me.

I tried to hair-metal it up slightly – hence the bandana ;) the clean rhythm guitar with heaps of open high E and B strings over all the chords, and the dirty rhythm under the second prechorus and chorus. My solo – at 19 seconds/4 bars short – is the teensiest I’ve played in a long time. It was actually rather fun. I couldn’t just noodle away as I might usually, so I ended up putting in some open-voiced triad things a la Eric Johnson, and some string-skipping silliness a la Paul Gilbert/Shawn Lane (probably more senor Pablo).

It was fun getting together a full song – and great having Cara sing – so you don’t have to put up with my vox :P Also check out Owen’s mega-cool solo 8)

Tributes to Shawn Lane (21 March 1963 – 26 September 2003)

6 years ago today, on the 26th of September 2003, one of the greatest electric guitar-players ever to walk the Earth passed away. Shawn Lane was only 30 years old, and not really widely known; Shawn was certainly not a household name, despite stories such as that of the first time Billy Gibbons heard him play: it is said that the Rev. literally fell off his barstool.

Shawn was not only one of the most technically mind-boggling guitar-players I (or the world for that matter) have ever heard; he was also wonderfully musical and inventive, with a wonderful compositional sense, which resulted in some fantastic music.

Since today is the anniversary of his death, I thought to pay my respects by recording a cover of another of his songs, and also collecting in a blog post all the Shawn Lane covers I could find on YouTube (Shawn himself is easily found on Willjay’s YouTube channel).

First up (because it’s my blog) is my latest Shawn Lane cover: Gray Pianos Flying:

I know it’s uptempo and rather upbeat – but I think it’s good to celebrate all the wonderful music that Shawn gave us: the joyful as well as the sad and reflective.

Now for the various YouTube covers. Having started, I’ve found so many that I’m going to do a bunch of posts: One for covers of Get You Back - as they’re the most numerous), and another for the rest.

“The Loner” cover

I was asked for a cover of The Loner, by Gary Moore, so I found the original last night, learnt it today in-between kid-wrangling, and recorded it this afternoon ;-)

Good song, and enjoyable to play. I hope you like my take on it. 8)
